As one of the most visually stunning VFX in Oceanus: Act One, the image of the plane sinking in the open ocean is haunting. The scene shows Dr. Erin Kendall discovering the disaster from above, by witnessing a crashed plane sink into the water. At this moment, the devastation on the surface has made its way to Dr. Kendall.
During the writing of Oceanus, Jeffrey Morris and Kimberly Morris needed a way to portray how disconnected being underwater was for the biologist. Kimberly imagined an object from the surface forced underwater. She explains, “If devastation like this happened, anything in the air would be destroyed.” She felt that a plane would accurately show the strength of the devastation and serve as a link to the surface, while staying believable. The concept of the sinking airplane was perfect.
As with all other FutureDude Entertainment productions, there was no need to add any graphic details. The intensity of the red hue and flames would be more than enough to compensate for excluding images of unfortunate passengers. By using creativity through production and visual techniques, the scene was dramatic enough to leave a lasting impression.
